Dress Up Dolly Ballerina

If like me you have a small daughter who is just learning to dance, the time will come when her class puts on a show. It is very exciting for all concerned with Mums and Grandmas vying for the best seats in the house and all the precious darlings getting to be a princess for a day. The first time my little girl was to be in a show she was only four years old, and imagine my dismay when I received the rehearsal timetable (eight sessions in the week before the performance!) plus instructions regarding hair and make up.

What exactly constitutes ‘full make up’ on a pre-schooler I asked myself? Yes – you guessed it – the works, from foundation through to mascara. The words highly inappropriate sprung to mind but after reassurances that they would all be the same and under the bright lights in the theatre it is necessary I just had to get on with it. If you are facing the same horror then here are a few tips which may help:

  1. Always have spare dance tights as the law of averages says that she will ladder her only decent pair on the day of the show. Check out consumer reviews on websites like Super Savvy Me for recommendations on brands.
  2. Don’t wash hair the day of the show as it will be more slippery and harder to control.
  3. Damp hair with a water spray and pull it back into a high ponytail as tightly and smoothly as possible. Apply gel to hold in place and then use a bun ring to form the ideal bun shape – simply post the ponytail through the hole in the middle and spread the hair around it to cover as you wrap it up.
  4. Finish with a bun net and lots of pins to keep everything in place.
  5. Once hair is done start on make up: mix foundation with a little moisturiser to be kinder to delicate skin and make sure you apply a lot of blusher for contouring.
  6. Try to keep your daughter from rubbing her face with hands and sleeves – accidental smudges on clothes can be dabbed at with watered down Fairy Liquid.
  7. Apply lipstick with a brush for ease, and if mascara is too difficult then draw in some lashes with black eyeliner.

Make up for dancing

If you’ve got into ballroom dancing, you may have noticed that your makeup needs some rethinking to show up enough on the dance floor. Follow this simple list of make up tips to ensure your face is as dazzling as your dance steps.

Start with some foundation to even out your complexion and reduce shadows. Make sure you have a shade that suits your natural skin colouring. Apply the foundation with a sponge over your entire face and go under your chin, onto your neck and up to the hairline. Blend evenly, and set the foundation using some powder.

Choose a blusher and apply to the cheeks while smiling.  Sweep the blusher up to the apples of your cheeks and out in the direction of your hairline.

Next put on some eye shadow. For dancing, the make up needs to be a lot heavier than you’d normally have it. Apply shadow to the whole of your eyelid using a colour that will make your eyes stand out. This is vital because stage lights will make your eyes appear smaller than normal. Choose a family of three colours and apply the darkest near your eye, the medium over the eyelid crease and the lightest shade can fill up the space to your eyebrow.

Put black eyeliner on your eyes to make them stand out. Liquid eyeliner is good for the top lid – start at the inner corner and apply a thin straight line.  Go further than your natural eyelid to accentuate your eye size. A pencil liner is better on the bottom lid. Start at the outer corner and draw below the lashes. Use your lashes as a guide as to where to start and stop the eyeliner.

Finally, apply two coats of black mascara to both your upper and lower lashes, or use false eyelashes. Finish your look with a bright coat of lipstick and blot your lips with a tissue to set the lipstick in place.

Will Philip miss Holly?

As showbiz partnerships go, Philip and Holly Willoughby’s is a close one. After all, they’ve presented Dancing on Ice together for six series, as well as being on the This Morning sofa together. But they won’t be together at Dancing on Ice 2012.

Holly is switching channels to go over to the BBC as host on the talent show The Voice.  Apparently, it’s not about the money for Holly, it’s more about the challenge of presenting a different show.

Still, Philip will see a lot of Holly – she’s staying on the sofa at This Morning, so they’ll still have lots of quality time together!

The pair got recognition for their work together just last week when This Morning won the TV Times Award 2011 Favourite Daytime Show for the second year running.  Holly was thrilled: “This prize last year was the first award I’d won as part of my time on the show, so it feels extra special to win it a second year running. Thanks to all those that voted for us!”

They even seem to spend time out of work together.  During the summer break from This Morning, the appeared to be holidaying together with their families this summer, when Holly tweeted pics of her and the Schofields late at night in a swimming pool at a party with Ant McPartlin.

So how will Philip be feeling about starting the seventh series of Dancing on Ice in January without his ‘telly wife’?  Well, he broke the news on his Twitter page saying: “Just to keep you in the loop, @hollywills won’t be presenting Dancing on Ice due to new commitments @clbleakley will step into the rink.”

He’s been ever the professional, saying really positive things about looking forward to working with Christine on DOI. The new dynamic duo has been working on a charity ITV programme called Text Santa with Ant and Dec, too. People following the Dancing on Ice odds will be keeping an eye on how well they do.

Christine has also been gushing about how excited she is to be a part of the DOI phenomenon, saying she is one of the show’s biggest fans.

Who’s going to win Strictly now?

So who’s going to win Strictly now? If you ask the bookmakers, it’s Harry Judd. But I’ve seen a  few polls knocking around the web to suggest that Eccles own’s Chelsee can take the top spot at Blackpool’s world famous Tower Ballroom on the 17th.

Nevertheless, the bookies usually know what they’re doing with this kind of thing and Harry Judd and 26 year old Russian dancing partner Aliona Vilani are hot favourites as things stand at around 1-2 in the Strictly Come Dancing betting.

Meanwhile, Chelsee Harvey and 31 year old Siberian-born Pasha Kovalev are hot on their heels at around 10-3 with most of the major bookies. After recent showings, Chelsee has begun to move through the field, closing the gap on perma-favourite Harry, whilst Jason Donovan – now the oldest competitor left in the Strictly contest – has slipped down the betting a little.

As things stand, Jason and his dance partner the lovely 34 year old Kristina Rihanoff (who also hails from Siberia – maybe there’s nothing else to do there but dance!?) are 7-1 third favourites in the Strictly Come Dancing odds.

Then there’s quite a gap to the remaining two pairings.

Alex Jones and Kent’s own 32 year old  James Jordan (real life partner of Ola Jordan – the lucky man) are a whopping 33-1 with the bookmakers. Available at exactly the same price are Holly Valance and Russian dancer Artem Chigvintsev.

Holly and Artem have come close a few times to getting the elbow, but keep managing to survive somehow.

Alex and James have steadily improved but may have left their late run too late. In last week’s show,  Alex looked very glamorous and started off well before something distracted her halfway through, and things went a little awry. She looked very downcast, but the judges clearly felt sorry for her and told her how well she’d done, to her considerable surprise. She even got a couple of 9s.

Unless something drastic happens, it’s a two horse race. So who’s your money on; Chelsee or Harry?

Wow! Week 10′s results show

Which celebrity dancer and his or her partner were going to be ejected from last week’s Strictly was probably the most interesting yet from this season.
The decision was seemingly absolutely wide open. Holly was the only one of the celebrity dancers who had previously been in the bottom two. But of course, she did really well with her dance. Holly and Artem did a Paso Doble.

In the preview, Holly said how much she was looking forward to this as it suited her fiery personality. It clearly did just that as her routine was superb and the judges loved it too, awarding the pair two tens and two nines. Holly just got told off a little for looking down at the floor. Those looking at the Strictly Come Dancing betting should know this is poor form.

Surprisingly, Jason was put into the bottom two. He and  Kristina had danced an American smooth number to the classic “Singin’ in the Rain” – preceded by a rather awkward feeling preview of Jason with a brolly having water thrown over him. It didn’t really work, but the dance did. The routine was technically excellent, with some good lifts. Alesha called it a “brilliant concept” – apparently thinking it was the first time anyone had ever danced with a brolly!

But the bottom two placing really seemed to shock Kristina, who got very upset as she realised their chances of winning the entire competition were hanging by a thread. Anyone following the Strictly Come Dancing odds would have been surprised.

Robbie was the other celeb’ in the bottom two and was very gracious in saying that Jason deserved to stay in ahead of him.

The music provided by a famous tenor singing about ten seconds each of all the James Bond movie theme songs, which was, ah, let’s say “different”.

Then came the moment of truth and, as we now know, Robbie and Ola were out. But they were happy enough, and Robbie says he’s pleased the great British public got to meet his nice side as opposed to his darker, “Mr Nasty” footballing persona.

Your favourite Strictly victor

If you’ve long been a fan of Strictly – and around 12 million Britons have – you’ll no doubt remember many of the classic moments the show has offered since it first revolutionised Saturday tea-time viewing back in May 2004.

But of all the Strictly series winners – which was your favourite pair?

Some of the winners have won by sheer dint of perseverance and personality, whilst others have simply been the series’ best dancers. People following the Strictly Come dancing winner odds should remember this.

Very much in the former camp was 2005 Series 3′s winner, cricketer Darren Gough, with professional dance partner Lilia Kopylova. The ex-captain of Yorkshire County Cricket Club was no Fred Astaire, but he worked like mad and simply got better and better – and the judges and voting public admired his determination.

One of the most memorable winners and best dancers came in Series 1 when then BBC newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky, partnered by Brendan Cole, took the honours. Natasha became even more of a household name than she already was and went on to co-present the first half of Series 2 in 2004, which was eventually won by Jill Halfpenny and dance partner Darren Bennett. Those looking for Strictly Come Dancing tips need to bear this in mind.

Former Coronation Street and EastEnders star Jill won the Strictly 2004 competition after receiving a maximum possible 40 marks from the judges in the final.

And who can forget Alesha Dixon’s win in 2007 with dance partner Matthew Cutler which helped both re-launch the singer’s career and make her a judge on the show – replacing fellow judge Arlene Phillips?

Then last year, of course, we had the fabulous Kara Tointon and partner    Artem Chigvintsev as series winners. The actress, best known for playing Dawn Swann in EastEnders, beat Matt Baker and his partner Aliona Vilani in the final dance off for a most memorable victory.

Holly Valance feels like she’s cheating on her husband

Australian soap star Holly Valance feels like she’s cheating on her husband she told the BBC’s “It Takes Two”.

Holly danced with Brendan Cole on last week’s Strictly Come Dancing after her regular pro partner Artem Chigvintsev was forced to withdraw due to a back injury. Artem did the choreography for Holly and Brendan, but it didn’t stop Holly feeling like she was cheating on her real life partner.

“Obviously it’s a little bit strange after seven weeks with Artem, but we had a great week together and we worked really hard at making it look seamless and like we’ve been together forever”, she said.

Meanwhile, Brendan Cole said that he felt under more pressure than ever before whilst performing the rumba with Holly. Anyone looking at the Strictly Come dancing winner odds will be wondering how the pair will do.

“The nerves were overwhelming. I would have felt so guilty and like I let him down if we’d been eliminated,” he told “It Takes Two”

Holly continues to train with Russian Artem ahead of this weekend’s Wembley Children In Need special after his injury was found not to be quite as serious as had initially been feared. Anyone following the Strictly Come Dancing odds should remember this.

Holly is perhaps best known for her international number one hit single “Kiss Kiss” as well as her role as Felicity ‘Flick’ Scully in Neighbours. She will be performing a quickstep this Saturday – hopefully alongside Artem – to Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie”.

The bookies currently make Holly and Artem fourth favourites at 11-1 to win the overall Strictly Come Dancing final at Blackpool next month. But if Artem battles back successfully from his injury, those odds could begin to look very generous indeed!

A closer look at Kristina

So let’s take a closer look at professional dancer and Strictly Come Dancing dancer Kristina Rihanoff – after all, which UK male wouldn’t want to get a lot closer to the lovely Kristina?

Alas – this privilege belongs only to the lucky, lucky Jason Donovan who gets to bump and grind with the 34-year-old Siberian week in and week out for as many months as the pair are able to survive the Strictly competition. And they show no signs of waning as yet. Just the opposite in fact. For the bookmakers have Jason and Kristina as second favourites to get the ultimate vote in Blackpool in December. Currently, the pairing are 11-4 second favourites in the Strictly Come Dancing betting.

It’s not hard to see why. Jason has been a revelation and Kristina is certainly getting a lot of the heterosexual male vote!

Kristina was born in Siberia and fell in love with music and dance at a young age. She entered her first dance competition at just seven and competed in many competitions throughout her formative years, eventually becoming a famous dance champion in Russia.

In 2004, Kristina was invited to compete in the World Exhibition at the Blackpool Dance Festival, eventually finishing runner-up with her partner in the Theatre Style category. Anyone looking for Strictly Come Dancing tips should remember this.

She then turned to the International Style Latin circuit with a brand new partner, Michael Wentink, a well-known Latin dance master. Together, the two won the South African Championship and were semi-finalists in the Latin American Division of the 2007 British Open in Blackpool.

Kristina’s hobby is professional make up, whilst her dance specialities are Latin and Mambo. When Kristina made her Strictly debut, she partnered the unforgettable John Sergeant. But it was her partnership with Welsh champion boxer Joe Calzaghe in 2009 that really hit the headlines when a dance partnership turned into a real life partnership (though they only survived to Week 5 in the actual competition).

In 2010, Kristina partnered DJ and musician Goldie – but they only got as far as Week 2. Let’s hope she does better this time. The odds favour it after all. Let’s also hope for Jason’s sake that big Joe isn’t getting jealous!

Healey gets strictly praise

According to Strictly Come Dancing judge and Italian fireball Bruno Tonioli, the Cha Cha is cheeky, saucy, playful and rhythmical, and celebrity contestant Chelsee Healey had all these qualities in abundance when she performed the dance in last week’s show.

The positive comments came despite the Waterloo Road star banging her head last week, after going outside with McFly star and fellow Strictly contestant Harry Judd and ‘being naughty’ apparently. We don’t know if this means having a fag or having a snog, but if it’s the latter, well you can’t blame the girl. Those looking at the Strictly Come Dancing odds should remember this.

Chelsee made a bit of a song and dance about her bump but disaster was averted with a cold compress and a swift change of hairstyle for the night’s live performance, which saw Chelsee sporting a comb over to cover the bruise. Phew. Anyone following the Strictly Come dancing winner odds should remember this.

What amazing hairdo the big-lipped, big-boobed, big-personalitied one will come out with next is anyone’s guess, but what we do know is that this weekend the Chelsee and her professional dancing partner Pasha Kovalev will be performing the Quick Step, which Chelsee is finding ‘quick’, shockingly. The twinkle toed duo will be dancing to a big band soundtrack and Chelsee will be donning a Britney Spears style air hostess outfit. Pasha’s only concern is that he’s been struggling to get Chelsee to concentrate during the rehearsals – less chat, more work Chelsee!

Strictly judge Len Goodman has described Chelsee as the dark horse of the competition however, so if she can get that attention span in check, she could see herself topping the leader board faster than you can say Paso Doble.

Jason shines in Strictly

‘I’m going to call you the midwife, because you keep delivering’, said Len Goodman of Jason Donavan’s performance on this week’s Strictly Come Dancing.

This week’s Strictly show was a Broadway special, which saw the celebs and their professional dancing partners shake their tail feathers to the soundtracks of some of Broadway’s top drawing musicals, including Chicago, Mamma Mia, Phantom of the Opera, Cats and Kiss me Kate.

As with previous Strictly episodes, Jason Donavan’s performance was once again a true belter, as he tangoed along on his twinkle toes to I Will Survive with professional dance partner Kristina Rihanoff. Former Neighbours star and technicoloured dream coat wearer Jason has proved himself to be a strong contender and a front runner in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing from day one. Those looking for Strictly Come Dancing tips will know this.

We knew after his appearance and third place spot in ‘I’m a Celebrity Get me Out of Here’, that Jason was a favourite with the public and not afraid of eating the odd kangaroo testicle in the name of public acceptance. We also knew that Jase was no stranger to performing, having had a successful singing career in the 90s after Neighbours. Who could forget ‘Especially for you’, Jason’s chart-topping duet with Kylie? And then there’s Jason’s stint in ever popular musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat. All of which have left him totally at ease on the stage. People looking at the Strictly Come dancing winner odds should bear this in mind.

Whether or not you preferred Phillip Schofield in that colourful coat, there’s no denying that Jason is a whizz on the dance floor as well as on the stage, and we can’t wait to see what smooth moves he’ll pull out of the bag next.
